Media Discourse: Evaluative Resources for the Construal of Identity and Persona in Mass Communicative Discourse

This thesis seeks to contribute to the scholarship which is interested in the evaluative meaning potential in spoken discourse. It explores how insights developed within the Appraisal framework (Martin & White, 2005) into attitudinal meanings can contribute to describing and mapping the various different evaluative styles (and the different discursively performed personae with which these may be associated) in naturally occurring Mandarin arguments.
